Content:

The thematic focus of this fellowship programme is on the question of gender and age(ing) in the Central and Southeast European context. It focuses on the living situations and lifestyles of older men and women in selected Central and Southeast European regions, which will be analysed on the basis of different data material, with a special focus on reflecting on the opportunities and challenges of a multi-method and interdisciplinary approach within the analysis. For example, the analysis of literary and filmic representations of gender and age will be related to the results of survey studies. The role of media consumption in general as well as the significance of new social media for the living environment of older people and potentially existing gender disparities in this area will be given special consideration. A comparative perspective to North, Central and South American regions allows to identify specifics of the Central and Southeast European region.

The combination of cultural sociological and cultural studies approaches allows a deeper understanding of the interactions between media representations of gender and ageing, socio-structural factors in the lives of men and women, as well as their attitudes and values.
